Just under 80 attended the Annual Celebration on Monday 29th October. Following delicious drinks and canapes provided by our hosts, Cobbetts, the talk ‘Us, God and Work’ was delivered by Chris Dinsdale as unfortunately John Parmiter was unable to attend because of problems on the train line between Birmingham and London. The questions raised in the talk were discussed in small groups and the feedback is as follows:-
What excites you about your job? – An encouraging 50% of those who came said they loved their work.
Why is work generally so difficult? – People put this down to overwork, lack of having control of their workload, competitiveness in teams, doing tasks which seemed wasteful and being asked to carry out work which they did not consider to be ‘right’.
Where is God in all this? – We were encouraged to ask God, to obey Him and then we would find out! Other suggestions were to pray blessing on our colleagues and to remember that God created each of us in His image, those we like as well as those we find difficult to relate to. We were reminded that God is always with us thus He is present even in the day to day tasks.
The concept of being in the right ‘shape’ of job, which matched the ‘shape’ of our God given gifts and abilities was also considered. If we are in the right shape job for our gifts and abilities there should be a sense of fulfillment.
In addition to recommending the new ChaplaincyPlus groups of City Net and City Legal, Chris gave a personal challenge for each person over the coming year. This was to meet up and to get to know someone younger than themselves. By doing that they could encourage them that God is present in their workplace and introduce them to City Lights!
