Light Read Plus, the ChaplaincyPlus Book Group, met on Monday 23 September having spent the summer months reading 4 books. There was a unanimous favourite which was “Ragamuffin Gospel” by Brennan Manning. We agreed that this was a book that could be lent to anyone. The group had enjoyed the simple imagery which helped us understand grace and gain a better understanding of God’s love for us. There was also high praise for “Mastering Monday” by John Beckett which was an encouraging book about faith in the workplace written by someone who recounted some of his own workplace experiences. We particularly enjoyed the chapters which referred to Bible passages and described the people in the context of modern day workplaces. This book had been easy to find online but not easy to find in bookshops.

The other book which was highly praised and recommended book was “Beautiful Outlaw” by John Eldredge. We agreed that this was an excellent book which gave a different and helpful perspective on passages from the Bible with which we were very familiar. This was a book that could be lent or given as a gift to others.

Only one person enjoyed “Shattered Dreams” by Larry Crabb. The others in the group had not managed to finish the book and found it depressing and unhelpful. The book was about learning to find God’s blessing through tragedies, the general view was that the book itself was not an aid to this!

The group will be reading Standing on My Knees by Jeff Lucas for the next meeting, the date of which has yet to be arranged.

For those looking for a book to follow for Advent readings the suggestion is Real God for a Real World.
