Light Read Plus, the ChaplaincyPlus book group, met on Monday 26 November at One Colmore Row to review the current books.  Since we last met we have been reading 3 books.  As usual a lively and interesting discussion about all the books took place!

We started with the shortest book Grace and Forgiveness by John and Carol Arnott.  Everyone was positive about this book and had partricularly enjoyed the practical examples and the honesty of the stories given to illustrate the Biblical principles which were clearly set out in the book.

Views on Diana Chapman’s Britain’s Spiritual Inheritance were more mixed.  Generally people enjoyed the book and everyone discovered something new with most people expressing a desire to find out more.  It was felt that there were gaps in the book, both in terms of the historical timeline and also in respect of the very limited references to the established Church.

The final book was Faith, Hope and the Global Economy by Richard Higginson which is being used as the basis for the autumn series of Tuesday Talks and Tuesday Talks Discussions.  The group were very positive about this book.  It is well written and a good, although not simple, read.  People had felt really encouraged by reading the book and had a renewed sense of purpose and hope in their workplaces as a result.

During Advent some of us will be reading Companions on the Bethelehem Road by Rachel Boulding which is a book of daily Bible readings and reflections for Advent and Christmas. Published by brf the book is available online and through Christian bookshops.

The bookgroup books for the next couple of months are as follows:

Who is this Man? by John Ortberg.  For those who like such things here is a link to the YouTube preview!

Discovering the Faith by John Pitchford.

The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Scepticism by Timothy Keller.

The links will take you to the amazon website but you can obviously purchase these books from local Christian bookshops.
