Why Sustainability?

Sustainability is the issue of our generation: the environmental crisis is “the largest challenge ever to the human race” and climate change is “everybody’s problem”, according to recent comments by the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. He acknowledges some people are reluctant to acknowledge the climate crisis because it is just too uncomfortable to face and requires a change of behaviour.  It is clear that we can’t just go on with “business as usual” – our current patterns are unsustainable and change is needed.

Why now?

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about massive change this year – and it’s vital that we use this “reset” to choose a sustainable path forwards, in our business community and beyond. And people are open to change: in a survey earlier this year, 85% of British people wanted to change how we live and do business after the pandemic to reflect what we truly value: our green spaces, clean air and stronger social bonds. The decisions we make over the next few years could set us on a path to a sustainable, healthy and green tomorrow or they could lock in pollution for generations to come.

Why City Sustainability Prayer Group?

City Sustainability is launching with a monthly City Sustainability Prayer Group, focusing on this issue, as catalyst for change: our city of Birmingham, our business sector and each of us individually has a role to play, participating in turning towards a path where local and global resources are stewarded sustainably for future generations. The examples of Cadbury in Birmingham and companies like Unilever and Patagonia today show that successful businesses can be based upon long term thriving rather than short term gains. Our new community of prayer will be a monthly online gathering of Christian workers across the West Midlands to pray for our workplaces and the people we serve, and support each other as we explore how to bring the values of God’s kingdom into our organisations. This is a community of shared learning and encouragement, for people at all stages of their careers.
